The University of Arizona is a premier, student-centered research institution. Established in 1885 as the first university in the Arizona Territory and the state's only land grant institution, the UA embraces its three-fold mission of excellence in teaching, research and public service. Now in its second century of service to the state, the UA has become one of the nation's top 20 public research institutions. It is one of only 62 members in the Association of American Universities, a prestigious organization that recognizes universities with exceptionally strong research and academic programs.

The UA is one of the leading research universities in the United States. As one of only 50 universities nationwide with a coveted “Research 1” designation, it was most recently ranked 14th amongst US public universities in terms of research funding received. The research of the theoretical astrophysics group benefits from close association with other campus-wide programs in theoretical and observational astrophysics, and its theoretical studies are closely related to observations made with nasa's space telescopes, including the Hubble Space Telescope, the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer, and the Chandra X-ray Observatory.
